Logical Recovery Verses Physical Recovery
Electronic information is stored in a logical container called a
partition. The partition is formatted so that the device knows how much
space is available for storage and where the storage location starts and
ends. The partition contains a master file table of some type. These
master file tables vary based on the operating system used by your
electronic device. The master file table is a map of where your files
are stored. This map is used by your device to add, change and delete
is needed when users delete data accidentally or the master file table
is damaged and your device cannot access the data.
Logical recovery is also used when users delete files by accident. The
files are marked as deleted in the master file table and the file space
is marked as available for use. These files can be recovered as long as
the file space has not been overwritten by new data or wiped with a
cleaner program. If you have deleted files accidentally, donít install
anything on the computer. Shut the computer off and take it in for data
recovery. Many people have destroyed their data by installing recovery
programs on the drive in which they want to recover from or by running a
disk repair tool like check disk or file defragmenter like Microsoft
Logical recovery is performed using software program that attempts to
read the master file table by ignoring errors or accessing a second copy
of the master file table. Once the master file table is read or repaired
then the data can be accessed.
If the master file tables are damaged beyond repair, files can be carved
from the raw data using file signatures. Most files have a signature at
the start and end of a file. By reading the drive from start to finish,
some files can be carved out of the data and recovered. This works well
with small files but is not good at large files. Files are stored in
many small pieces called clusters. Full Recovery is difficult without
the master file table to show where all the clusters are located. When
using the raw recovery method, the files original name is lost but its
contents are intact. Picture, spreadsheet and documents are recoverable
with this technique due to fitting in one cluster or sequential
is when the device has an electronic or physical damage that is
preventing access to your data.
Printed Circuit Board (PCB) failure is a common occurrence. This is when
a chip or circuit on the board fails. The board can be replaced with a
donor board from an identical board in most cases. The serial chip must
be moved from the original PCB to the donor board. Special tools are
required to perform this.
Hard drive failure is common after 1 to 5 years of operation based on
the model and initial quality of drive. I have had new drives fail in
one month and others run for 10 years. Hard drives contain spinning
disks with an actuator arms that moves read / write heads over the disks
to read and write data. The actuator arm with read / write heads is
called a head stack. When the head stack fails, the drive must be
repaired in a clean room facility. A clean room is an area that is
99.99% dust free. The drive is opened and the head stack is removed and
then replaced with a donor head stack.
Head crash is when the read / write head physically scrapes the spinning
platters. The magnetic coating on the disk is scraped off. This
destroys the head stack and makes the drive nearly impossible to
recover. All the magnetic power covers the disks and causes any new
head stack to fail immediately.

- Express service is available for $100 per device. Your diagnosis will be started the day it is
received at our office.

extraction may be required on some recovery jobs. We

$750 per device.

Shipping and media charges are additional and will be quoted
after diagnosis. The rates above are estimated and may vary
depending on your configuration and data recovery time frame
