Founding the Company: The Quest of Douglas Bray
Doug's family moved from New Jersey to Bloomington Indiana in 1965. Doug's dad, John R Bray Jr. was a tool and die maker for Otis Elevator. Otis Elevator opened a branch in Bloomington Indiana and John requested a transfer to the Bloomington plant.
Doug has lived in Indiana since he was 2 years old and considers himself a native Hoosier! Doug has a fascination with cars since birth. Doug's father taught him a lot about engineering from an early age. Doug rebuilt his first VW engine at the age of 17 with many more to follow!
Doug was working at a Volkswagen car dealership as a service writer but aspired to be a mechanic at the dealership. The only way to get hired as a mechanic was to get ASE Certified. The dealership told him if he wanted the job he had to pass the exams. Doug studied a stack of repair guides and passed the exams. Doug worked as an ASE certified mechanic and auto body repair technician to pay for his own college tuition.
Starting in 1982, Doug attended IVY Tech State College in Bloomington Indiana for Computer programming. Doug was looking for work in the computer field while attending college but the pay was minimal. He was offered to work split shifts as a computer operator for $3.25 an hour. This was about 20% of what he was making as a mechanic.
One of Doug's old friends was working in Indianapolis at a company called Logo7. He thought his company may have a job opportunity in 12 to 18 months. Doug submitted his resume, but didn't think anything would come out of it. Two week later Doug was offered an operations job at $6.25 per hour! This was almost twice the revenue of the opportunity in Bloomington. Doug was living in Bloomington and drove 1.25 hours each way daily. This got old pretty quick and transportation time & cost were making his net pay at about $2.50 an hour.
Doug graduated from Ivy Tech and moved to Indianapolis in 1986. Doug worked hard in the programming arena trying to make as much money as he was as a mechanic. Doug was programming and networking computers on his spare time to make additional money. This was the start of Bray Technologies!
Doug worked for multiple companies during his career including: Logo7, Bindley Western Drug, IBM Contractor through Software Alternatives Inc., South Western Bell Telecom and KLF business communications.
In 1992, Doug went back to school for a bachelor's degree in business management at Indiana Wesleyan. Doug graduated in 1994. Doug enjoyed IT Consulting and decided to resign his IT Manager Position at KLF business communication and pursue Bray Technologies full time. Bray Technologies went from a sole proprietor status to chapter S corporation in 1995.
1996 Doug opened a carry in repair center at 6132 N. College Ave. Indianapolis IN 46220. The quest was to provide affordable computer support, repair & upgrades for everyone. The focus was residential and small to Mid size businesses. The large companies usually had their own IT Departments.
Doug saw the need for data
recovery services for the every day user and started pursuing the knowledge
required. Only a few companies were providing the service of data recovery. We
started with logical recoveries and progressed into a full data recovery center
with our own clean room!
Bray Technologies is an Apple Authorized service center, Dell Solution Provider Direct, Microsoft Partner, Sonicwall Partner and Advanced Data Recovery Center.
